LFE Question

I would like to start out by saying I have just recently gotten back into the whole home theatre thing and have really enjoyed your magazine and Web site. I am looking into adding several subwoofers to my home theatre system in the near future, and I’m concerned with the LFE channel and how it will figure into the whole thing. If I have a subwoofer attached to each channel (front, center, and surround) will I need to still have a subwoofer attached to the sub-out on my receiver? If I understand from what I have read, it seems that during the mixing of DVDs that certain low levels are redirected to the LFE channel. Does this mean that the other 5 channels do not operate at a full frequency even if the receiver is set to large speakers? If I left anything else out I would greatly appreciate your input.

Audio Review Editor Richard Hardesty Comments:

I covered the subject of bass management quite thoroughly in the article Digital Controllers Part 2 , published in Issue 32 of WSR. This article should answer all your questions about what happens to low frequencies during recording and playback. If you add subwoofers to the main channels you’ll have to use an external crossover to divide high and low frequencies from a full-range signal to each channel.
