G-90 Review

Dear Gary: I liked your magazine’s review of the Sony G-90. Better review than the one in Stereophile’s Guide To Home Theater. I disagree on one thing, though. I think an 8-inch CRT projector (almost always graphic grade) is much closer in quality to a 9-inch projector than to a 7-inch projector (basically consumer data grade). Most of the time they have the same bandwidth, same flyback, same scanning rate as a 9-inch projector, and in some cases, almost the same light output. A far cry from a 7-inch CRT. Also, there are more options than the ones you just mention in the $35,000 range 9-inch projectors: Electrohome Marquis 9500 and Barco 1209 and 1609 (the Vidikron is based on the Electrohome, the Runco on the Barco). And last, I wonder if your excellent reviewer/technician could write us a paper on how to install and set up a CRT projector —From A to Z? It’s never been done. A lot more people would buy CRT projectors if they new they could set them up themselves. These guys are buying LCD projectors only because they can install them themselves.

Grosse Fatigue

Editor Gary Reber Comments:

While the performance of 9-inch CRTs are undisputable, I agree with you that the Runco and Vidikron-based 8-inch CRT projectors are much closer in performance to a 9-inch CRT than to a 7-inch CRT-based projector. We are planning a future Special Edition on “How To Build A Home Theatre,” which will include a section on CRT projector setup.
