DTS Bias?

Dear Gary: I am in the midst of an online discussion concerning Widescreen Review’s “bias” toward DTS vs. Dolby Digital. My position is that WSR is a fine publication, two steps above the everyday pablum which passes for A/V journalism. The opposition claims that your personal grudge against Dolby Digital taints WSR’s objectivity. Is there any ammunition I could use to support my position for WSR? ABX testing of DTS vs. Dolby Digital? Independent studies? Other experts’ opinions? Why do you prefer DTS? Keep up the good journalism.

Editor Gary Reber Comments:

This debate is an amazing thing. I don’t know of any professional in the recording and post production field who doesn’t prefer DTS Digital Surround to Dolby Digital. End of story. Movie Sound Editor Perry Sun Comments: Those who believe we have a bias toward DTS other than on the basis of what we hear in direct comparisons with Dolby Digital are acting immature. For the record, it would take too long to revisit all the writings in the magazine, but I can point you to volumes of back issues in which we thoroughly covered the subject. Presently, we have published new articles on the subject of movie sound codecs that you will find educational (Issues 37 and 38). There is a forum on DTS vs. Dolby Digital on our own site, www. widescreenreview.com that you may want to investigate.
