On behalf of the millions of DVD player owners out there, I’d like to express my outrage over Lucasfilm’s decision to continue to postpone the release of the Star Wars movies on DVD. Frankly, the excuses I’ve read on the Star Wars Web site—”While Episode I will eventually be released on DVD, it will not be this year. George Lucas would like to do something special with Star Wars on DVD, but cannot take time from the tight Episode II schedule to work on it right now.”—is abused spin that insults my intelligence and paints George Lucas as a maniacal control freak who doesn’t see anyone in his vast production empire other than himself as capable of handling the job of producing the DVDs.I have spent thousands of dollars to view top-rated state-of-the-art DVDs in my home theatre. I saw Episode I once in a theatre and was extremely disappointed with the picture and sound quality. I was eager to see it released on DVD so I could see and hear the movie as I would have liked. Alas, it appears I will have to wait several more years to do so.So, while Lucasfilm takes the next half-decade to finish the next Star Wars movies, I, for one, will not see them in any movie theatre, nor will I be hijacked into seeing them on VHS. I will, however, enjoy hundreds of other fantastically produced DVDs in my home theatre.
