No Centre Or Subwoofer Sound?

Dear Gary: I have just purchased a DVD-Video player (Pioneer) and also a new amplifier capable of Dolby Digital 5.1 (3/2/1) surround. When I rent a movie, for instance Matrix (5.1 surround), I get the full effect of centre channel, left and right, the two rear channels and the subwoofer (awesome), but when I rent other movies that say they have a 5.1 soundtrack (Stir Of Echoes) I only get the four channels front and rear, not centre or sub. Why? When my system (Harman Kardon) recognizes the digital signal from the DVD-Video player it defaults to the 3/2/1 (5.1), which it should do as this is the best possible scenario. Even if I crank the volume separately on those soundtracks to lost channels it still does not put out anything. Help!!!!!!

Movie Sound Editor Perry Sun Comments:

It could very well be that you’re experiencing a soundtrack with a wide sonic image and conservative usage of the center channel (except for dialogue), in addition to limited engagement of low frequencies. However, we have found that the Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack for Stir Of Echoes produces at times an energetic, spatially enveloping soundfield that spans all of the channels with powerful, often intense .1 LFE enhancement of deep bass.
