Multiple Subwoofer Levels

Dear Gary: I'm happy that the magazine moved to a monthly print. With bi-monthly issues, I end up waiting a month and a half to read the next issue because I have a habit of reading each issue within the first few days I receive it in the mail. Keep up the wonderful work!!! I think Mr. Hardesty has done a fantastic job on reviewing subwoofers and explaining set up, etc. Wanting deep bass extension at high levels, I’m about to order four Paradigm PW-2200 subwoofers—one for each of the main four channels. How do I set the correct level of bass on the sub in relation to the main loudspeaker’s output? I’m unclear on how to integrate the two together seamlessly without the sub being too loud compared to the main loudspeaker. Is there a procedure that can be explained, and maybe a certain test tone(s) I can use with the SPL meter? I’m clear how to set up the “.1” channel, I'm just not clear how to set up sub levels for L, R, LS, RS that I want to run as full range. What was the procedure for Reference System L? An answer would be great, especially before the “Subwoofer Special” is released. Any reference to source material would be greatly appreciated.

Audio Equipment Technical Editor Richard Hardesty Comments:

I gave detailed instructions about subwoofer integration and adjustment in Part 4 of the subwoofer series, published in Issue 31 of WSR. There is additional information in the just published The Essential Subwoofer Buyer’s Guide special edition.
