Dear Gary:Does “harshness” mean that the sound designer cranked up the volume too high on a movie soundtrack? Does “thin” mean that the sound designer cranked the volume of the movie soundtrack too low? What is the Dolby reference level for any movie soundtrack.

Movie Sound Editor Perry Sun Comments:
“Harsh” generally means a loud soundtrack that is uncomfortable to the ears with excessive mid/high frequency content. “Thin” is sort of a perceptual term, meaning that the sound is bright (lots of high frequencies), to the point that it just seems that the audio just consists of treble and little else. Reference level for films is 85dBC (18dBFS in the digital domain).
