  WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
"Flashdance" is the 1983 hit about Alex Owens (Beals), a gifted young performer just starting out on the banks of New York City. Struggling to make her way without any formal education, Alex works hard as a welder by day and as a dancer by night

DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.78:1 DVD exhibits a picture that is quite smooth and solid for its age. Colors are nicely balanced with accurate fleshtones, rich reds, bold blues, and deep blacks. Images are quite sharp and detailed, though some scenes are softly focused. Contrast is nicely balanced, though shadow delineation is a bit wanting at times. Minor dirt is noticed in the source element. There is some edge enhancement and pixelization detected. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is a remastering effort, with music that is spatially distributed throughout the listening space. Although there is certainly dimensional prominence with the music hits, the sonic character tends to err toward the strident side, and also exhibits the original recording's dated fidelity. The music can also seem somewhat exaggerated in the soundstage, especially in the surrounds. The audio otherwise features dialogue with adequate clarity and a reserved soundstage presence with the ambience. There's a nice low-end foundation to the music with modest to moderate .1 LFE engagement. (Perry Sun)
