Story Synopsis:
As World War II raged on, battles were being fought on the South Atlantic sea. The captain of an American destroyer (Mitchum) was pursuing The Enemy Below the surface; a German U-boat led by a determined leader (Jurgens). While the war continued and the two honorable men tried to outmaneuver each other, both enemies grew to develop a trust and respect for the other unlike one that many friends ever reach. Based on the novel by Commander D.A. Rayner. (Tricia Littrell)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD picture has certain dated characteristics, evident in the color scheme and in sharpness. Fleshtones have a brownish appearance at times, but can otherwise seem natural, and blacks are deep but undefined. While the picture offers generally pleasing details, there is a slightly blurry or smeared quality. Contrast can seem a bit low as well. The source element is revealing of occasional dirt and film grain. Still, the picture is often smooth, with little pixel breakup and rarely distracting edge enhancement. (Suzanne Hodges)
