  WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The 2005 remake of the 1979 classic fright film "The Amityville Horror" stars Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George as the Lutz couple who, together with their children, move to their dream home in Amityville, Long Island. Unfortunately for them, a young man murdered his entire family in the house a year earlier, and it is now filled with unimaginable horrors. Based on a screenplay by Sandor Stern, the book by Jay Anson, and on actual historical events. (Tricia Spears)

DVD Picture:
A nice touch for this remake has to do with the fact that it can, at times, be mistaken (if by looks alone) for the 1979 original. The anamorphically enhanced DVD picture looks like it has come straight out of the 1970s, not only due to sets and costumes, but also due to the color palette and a slightly soft veil. Certainly, there are other scenes that have a distinctly crisp, clean appearance that you could never expect from a movie of that era, and the picture can appear very slick and smooth. Colors are often richly saturated with deep, true blacks. Contrast and shadow delineation are excellent, allowing for a few good moments of suspense and thrills. Very minor edge halos are noticed at times, and pixelization is also occasional. (Suzanne Hodges)

Soundtrack:
The bone-chillingly realistic Dolby Digital
