Rated R for language, sexuality, nudity and drug content.
With the best real on-field football action since Varsity Blues, Any Given Sunday stars Al Pacino as Tony D
The anamorphically enhanced DVD exhibits the same excellent quality as the DVD reviewed in Issue 42. The most impressive aspect of this anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD is the incredible clarity displayed throughout the picture. Somewhat distracting is the exaggeration of hues, but balance throughout the color scheme reflects the stylized vision of director Oliver Stone and DP Salvatore Totino. Fleshtones can appear quite orange at times. Taking the color stylization into consideration, the picture exhibits beautiful quality with no major distractions of any kind. (Suzanne Hodges)
There is not much to this PCFriendly compatible release: just a nice Shockwave introduction and some articles and reviews about the film. From the main DVD-ROM menu, you are given the option to view the film by selecting Play Movie, or go to the DVD-ROM features by clicking Playbook. Once in the DVD-ROM features, you are given three new links. There is nothing too exciting here either, I am afraid. Your options are Special Online Events, Scoreboard, and Sound Hits. The same Warner Brothers online event Web site is brought up after clicking the Special Online Events link, and is still not updated. The entire site revolves around The Matrix as it did over a year ago. I agree it is a great film, but they must have some new material since then! Essays and reviews on this, and other football films can be found in the Scoreboard section. The essays is pretty long, and gets pretty boring to read with no pictures to break up all the text. It is easy to read though, with a nice large white font on an all black background. The reviews on the film can not be accessed directly from the disc, you must have an Internet connection established. In the Sound Hits section, you can find a listing of the songs that are on the Any Given Sunday soundtrack, as well as a link to Atlantic Record's home page where you can purchase the compact disc. You must have an Internet connection established to view this site. Also available on this DVD is a new section called DVD Sampler. This is similar to a discography of many other Warner Brothers releases available on DVD. A listing of the main cast and crew, the plot, and all the special features available are given for each title. You are also given a link to Warner Brothers online store, where you can purchase each of these titles. When viewing the film directly from the PCFriendly software, you are brought to the DVD Video main menu. From here, simply click the Play Movie link with your mouse to continue. Not only is very little available for us DVD-ROM users on this disc, but everything is poorly presented as well. They did include a Shockwave introduction, which shows they spent some time on this, but by the looks of everything else, it was not much. (Danny Richelieu)
Reason #35 Why Readers Love Widescreen Review:
While on vacation at my uncle's house, I was introduced to WSR. My instinct told me it was just another A/V magazine. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down, and I knew this was a keeper. The number one question I receive at work is which is the best sounding movie. With the help of your movie reviews, I now have people calling my cell just to find out which new release sounds the best. Your reviews are always on target! Your product reviews have increased my knowledge beyond expectations. I know that when someone asks me about a new product on the market, all I have to do is wait for my next issue to show up. Your philosophy on sound systems has totally changed the way I go about selling and setting up surround sound systems in my customerís houses. Thanks to WSR I've been able to increase my sales, knowledge, and gain customer satisfaction. In my pursuit for sound perfection WSR is one of my valued assets.
