In a squalid South American oil town, four desperate men sign on for a suicide mission to drive trucks loaded with nitroglycerin over a treacherous mountain route. As they ferry their explosive cargo to a faraway oil fire, each bump and jolt tests their courage, their friendship, and their nerves. The result is one of the greatest thrillers ever committed to celluloid, a white-knuckle ride from France's legendary master of suspense Henri-Georges Clouzot. (Tricia Spears)

Nearly presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.37:1, the 1.32:1 1080p AVC picture was created on a Spirit Datacine from a 35 mm fine-grain master. According to Criterion, thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System. While grain is apparent, the picture is generally pristine, sharp, and clear. The overall pictures appears a bit overblown, with highlights and generally poor contrast. Unfortunately, edge enhancement is prevalent throughout. (Gary Reber)
The French uncompressed LPCM monaural soundtrack was restored as best it could be, given the poor quality of the original Western Electric film elements. While the dialogue is clear, the overall sound is distorted and undistinguished. The sound is loud, exceeding the SPL standard. (Gary Reber)
