Fans of literary classics and fantasy comic books like the "X-Men" will at least be entertained by this creative, action packed adventure based on the graphic novel miniseries by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill. The year is 1899. Queen Victoria has assembled a team of evil-fighting heroes known as "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen." These men (and one woman) possess extraordinary talents and powers that help them take on the evil Fantom, who has tricked several European countries into war with each other. Among them are master hunter Allan Quatermain (Connery); scientist and vampiress Mina Harker (Wilson); ageless, but secretive, Dorian Grey (Townsend); vessel operator Captain Nemo (Shah); The Invisible Man (Curran); and even Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Flemyng). (Suzanne Hodges)

The amount of time it took to load up this DVD was extraordinary. Special features include the same two commentary tracks as found on the DVD; a Search Content feature; a Personal Scene Selections feature, which allows the viewer to select specific scenes and be able to return to that personal scene selection by pressing "i" on your remote; a trivia track; trailers; and a shooting gallery game.

With deep blacks and good contrast, the 2.35:1 Blu-ray Disc image can be impressively dimensional, but details are not as consistently well resolved as on the best releases. Fleshtones can have a slightly reddish hue. (Danny Richelieu)

The core DTS® stream from the lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack features good fidelity, but some distortion can be heard in the loudest scenes. (Danny Richelieu)
