"The Gentlemen" follows American expat Mickey Pearson (McConaughey), who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. (Gary Reber)

The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD HDR10/Dolby Vision picture, reviewed on a Sony Bravia Z9D 4K Ultra HD HDR display, was photographed digitally in anamorphic Panavision® using Arri Alexa XT Plus camera systems at 3.4K and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. This is a beautiful picture with a stunning color palette with a wide range of naturally saturated hues. Warmth and richness dominate the imagery throughout with perfectly balanced shading for a terrifically realistic look. At times colors pop. Fleshtones are perfectly natural. HDR contrast is excellent with perfectly balanced levels. Blacks are deep and natural. Shadow delineation is superb. Lighting is effectively contrasted with midtones and dark levels. Bright spot lighting is always natural. Resolution is amazing with precise, fine detail, especially revealing in clothing and object texture. Facial features are finely resolved with revealing lines, skin pores, hair, beards and beard stubble. WOW! features are from 19:15 to 22:30 and 01:34:20 to 01:37:43. This is a captivating visual experience that focuses on character development and mystery, for an engaging experience. (Gary Reber)

The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is naturally dynamic sounding. Atmospherics are realistic and enveloping. Sound effects are at times intense and sharp, as well as powerful, such as gunfire and crashes. Deep bass, when energized, is powerful and extends to sub025 Hz. The orchestral score is well recorded with instrumental delineation and natural timbre and dynamic resolution. Surround envelopment is nicely supportive but not aggressive. The focus is frontal with a wide and deep soundstage. The music element provides effective surround energy Dialogue is at times heavily accentuated but is clear and generally well integrated spatially.

The Immersive Sound element is comprised of the orchestral score extensively extended to the height channel, which at times is very aggressive. Also there are various atmospherics and sound effects sporadically placed, such as a bird chirping, dog barks, dialogue during the tool shed basement marijuana facility, intense swish sounds, outdoor ambience, city ambience and other sporadic sound effects. Overall, the music carries this element, which makes for a dimensional extension to the ear-level sonics.

This is an effectively enjoyable holosonic® spherical surround soundtrack that is well crafted to support the intriguing storyline. (Gary Reber)
