"The Boogyman" is a horror-thriller from the mind of Stephen King. Two sisters (Soohie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair) — along with their therapist father (Chris Messina) — are reeling from their mother’s death. When a desperate patient comes to their home, he leaves behind a terrifying entity that feeds on its victims’ suffering. (Gary Reber)

The 2.39:1 1080p AVC picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally and sourced from a 2K Digital Intermediate. This is for the most part a very dark movie that exhibits a lot of shadowy scenes. With such dark imagery the picture still retains a realistic and natural appearance. Within the home, lighting design is a major element that sets the emotional mood of the interior of the house. Color fidelity is natural with warm and rich hues. Even in the dar scenes colors retain some vividness. Flesh tones retain naturalness throughout no matter the lighting intensity. Contrast is effective in displaying black levels and shadow delineation. White levels appear natural including extensive candle light on the floor. Exteriors during daylight are realistic. Resolution exhibits good detail even during dark scenes, especially during closeups. Facial feature appear natural, even the father's beard during closeups. This is an effectively scary movie with a horrific monster that thrives in darkness. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding with shock transient deep bass attack that enhance the fright segments. Atmospherics and sound effects are effectively enhanced with precise Foley support. Sound effects are bolstered with deep, sub-25 Hz frequencies in the .1 LFE channel. The orchestral score is creepy and delivers a constant haunting presence enhanced with a deep bass foundation. The music extends wide and deep across the soundstage and envelops the surrounds. Surround energy is intense with strong directionalized positioning. Dialogue is not always clear due to at times extremely low levels. This is an intensely scary holosonic® soundtrack that will excite home theatre enthusiasts due to its excellent dynamics, deep bass and orchestral score. It is disappointing that the original Dolby Atmos soundtrack in theatrical release was not provided because this is ideal for a strong height layer. (Gary Reber)
