The 1.85:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on 35 mm film in Super 35 using the Panavision Panaflex Millennium camera system and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format. While shot on film, the visual appearance is that of digital. Picture quality is excellent. Film grain is virtually non-existent. The setting is on the various quarters aboard the spaceship Grendel and its shuttle. The backgrounds are techno structures displaying mostly metal hardware features. Color fidelity exhibits well balanced hues that reflect the structures of the spaceship. Blood is warm and rich and pops. Flesh tones are perfectly natural. HDR contrast is superb. Backs, including the blacks of space outside the ship, appear deep and solid. Shadows are revealing, White levels are well illuminated with all manner of brilliant lighting effects. Resolution is excellent. Fine detail is exhibited in facial features., spaceship structures and objects. This is a sharp and clear presentation but more digital in appearance than filmic, (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding with a deep bass foundation just about in every scene. Atmospherics are creepy and at times bolt out and supported by deep .1 LFE bass. The spaceship Grendel is full of atmospheric sounds of equipment and machinery Sequences like the nanotechnology reconstruction of Rowan and Jason deliver a palette of subtle sound cues accompanying the work of the tiny machines. Sound effects can be intense, such as the spectacular collision between the Grendel and a space station, with bass extension to sub-25 Hz. Foley sound effects are realistic. The orchestral score is dynamic with a wide and deep soundstage that extends to the surrounds. Surround envelopment is aggressive and extensive throughout. Dialogue is intelligible throughout with generally good spatial integration. This is a well-crafted holosonic® soundtrack that delivers a horrific sonic experience. (Gary Reber)
