The 1.85:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on 35 mm film using J-D-C cameras and sourced from a 4K restoration by Arrow Films from the original negative to create a master Digital Intermediate. Film gran is smooth and generally unobjectionable, The EC Comics animation that connects the tales is simplistic but compelling. In the first tale entitled "Old Chief (Wood'nhead),", the setting is the dying town of Dead River, with a setting that exhibits complete realism. Color fidelity is excellent, The dirt roads and wood buildings are perfectly hued, In the second tale "The Raft" the setting is a remote lake surround by rocks and greenery. in which everything appears perfectly natural, Color fidelity is nicely saturated with rich and warm hues, which pop. In the third tale "The Hitchhiker", the road and forest scenes and the wrecked Mercedes all appear realistic with nicely saturated color. However, rain is courser than in the other tales and masks fine detail. Overall, picture quality for each tale is good, including the animation and the creepy characters. The imagery is noticeably bright throughout. Colors often pop. Flesh tones and bodies appear perfectly natural. HDR contrast is dynamic. Blacks are deep and solid, Shadows are nicely defined, White levels are well illuminated and natural. Resolution throughout exhibits generally good detail, such as in facial and body features, clothing fabrics, structures and objects, though some segments exhibit some softness, The imagery throughout appears natural and cinematic with excellent color fidelity, (Gary Reber).
The repurposed DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 channel soundtrack sounds generally good though with apparent limits to dynamic range and fidelity and any sense of imaging. The sound overall rather conveys a huge monaural soundscape that is front-centric. Bass support is limited in extension and power, though the .1 LFE channel is often active. The orchestra score's fidelity, in particular, sounds rather bright , favoring the midrange and high frequencies, and lacks a solid robust bass foundation. Sound effects are generally effective such as the gurgling of the water in the lake or the marauding of the Mercedes in The Hitchhiker tale. The monaural surround extension is enveloping, Dialogue is intelligible throughout but often sounds forward and wanting in spatial integration as a result of prominent ADR production. Overall, the soundtrack delivers a rather monophonic holosonic® experience with full-range fidelity wanting. (Gary Reber)
