The 2.39:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally using Arri, Phantom HD, Red Custom Tron V-Raptor XL, Fusion Camera and HDCAM SRR camera systems and remastered from the original digital sources under the supervision of Director Joseph Koskinski to create a 4K Digital Intermediate. TRON: Legacy was exhibited theatrically in 70 mm (horizontal) IMAX DMR blowup dual-strip 3D and D-Cinema 3D, respectively, in shifting 1.78:1 and 2.39:1 aspect ratios. This 4K Ultra HD version is strictly 2D. The 2D presentation is reference quality throughout, with stellar picture quality and dimensionality. This 4K edition brings to life the visually stunning world of TRON, taking the viewer further behind the futuristic digital grid. Picture quality is stunningly cinematic. The imagery on the grid appears to be vast as are the environments surrounding the elder Flynn digital landscape. This puts one in the grid, with its seemingly endless blackness and shades of slate grays and cool blue tones, with orange/yellow and red, neon highlights. The color palette is nicely saturated against the darker backdrops. The color palette is vivid with pure saturated hues. The color gamut exhibits nuanced hue shadings that reveal the intricacies of THON's computerized world. Colors pop with intensity. Flesh tones are perfectly natural in appearance and nicely contrasted against the blackness. HDR contrast is dynamic and delineates the deep, solid vastness of blackness, dark shadows and the bright white levels. Blacks are inky and solid yet revealing of texture, Shadows are revealing of textural gray and black textures. White levels are brilliant and intense with excellent detail. Resolution is remarkable, considering the dark abyss within which the imagery is set and is finely defined throughout. Facial features reveal skin pores, lines, makeup, beards and hair. Costumes are revealing of fine textures during closeups. Structural features reveal textures. Environmental elements that include rock formations and dark clouds also reveal texture. Objects are sharply defined. The production design and sets are amazing in structure and lighting. Both real-world and CGI images are clearly delineated. The light cycles, though transparent, project dimensionality with a sense of volume and weight. Also well defined are the glass-like shattered remnants of the digital combatants that scatter in the vastness when terminated. The picture is pristine and immaculate throughout. This is an extraordinary picture that in the world of TRON appears stylistically and impressively digitized. (Gary Reber)

The Dolby Atmos.Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is spectacular and was nominated for the Academy Award® for Best Sound Editing. Driven by intense and diversified sound effects as well as Daft Punk's rhythmic synthesizer score, the sound envelopes the sound field with aggressive intensity and constant use of the surround channels. Sound effects and atmospherics are impressive, whether distant thunder, roaring light cycles, rumbling flying machines, buzzing insects, and Foley touches that suspend disbelief. Sound effects are aggressively directional throughout the sound field, with pinpoint localization and exciting panning movements. Sound effects are supported by powerfully deep bass that extends often to sub-25 Hz with intense .1 LFE effects, such as thunder. The music encompasses a wide and deep soundstage with aggressive extension to the surrounds that supports the on-grid sequences and the dramatic events leading up to those scenes. The sound is sweeping, with a deep and wide soundstage presence that aggressively penetrates the surround channels, delivering a fullness that engulfs the listening space. The sound field is in constant motion with perspective imaging and panning. The overall clarity and definition of the sonics is impressive, especially during the many segments in which all channels are pushed to the limits of the SPL standards for movie soundtracks. Surprising is how well the dialogue is spatially integrated and focused, with perfect intelligibility.

The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an aggressive extension of the synthesizer score and arcade music to the height layer as well as occasional atmospherics and intense sound effects that are directional and panned within the height layer This includes a woman program's announcement and two announcements by men programs, thunder, digital flying machines and explosive finale. While the height treatment is effective when employed there are long gaps where there is no signal in the height layer. Far more could have been achieved.

This is a spectacular holosonic® spherical surround soundtrack that delivers intense sonics in motion and dimension and delivers a pure adrenaline-inducing sonic experience. (Gary Reber)
