Silverado 4K Ultra HD

In "Silverado," four unwitting heroes who cross paths on their journey to the sleepy town of Silverado. Little do they know the town where their family and friends live has been taken over by a corrupt sheriff and a murderous posse. The 2.35:1 1080p picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on 35 mm Eastman film in Super Techniscope using the Panavision Panaflex camera system and sourced from a 4K master Digital Intermediate format, The setting is the open spaces of the Wild West. Film grain is extremely smooth and subtle if not invisible. The territory provides beautiful landscapes and mountainous backdrops. The Technicolor palette exhibits gorgeously saturated hues that are warm and rich, Colors are earthy desert browns, grays and grayish slate as reflected in the leather saddles, wooden rifle stocks, worn jackets, and terrain, often covered in sand or brownish dirt dotted with sparse green shrubbery, The color gamut exhibits a exquisite range of hues that enhance the realism of the natural environment and the western towns. Colors are perfectly realistic throughout. Flesh tones are realistically hued. HDR contrast is superb with dynamic outdoor and indoor settings. Blacks are deep and solid. Shadows reveal shadings and depth. White levels appear perfectly realistic. Resolution is absolutely remarkable with fine detail exhibited throughout. Facial features reveal skin pores, sweat, lines, beard and hair. Costumes reveal fiber texture. Town structures are revealing fine detail and texture, Objects are nicely detailed. This is a stunningly stellar cinematic picture with superb color fidelity and realism. A real classic to be cherished. (Gary Reber)

The repurposed Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding. The range is from nuanced quiet to loud gun shots. Atmospherics are realistic throughout. Sound effects are also realistic sounding and powerful, from an intense ragging house fire, the galloping of horses and wagons crossing the rugged territory, a cattle stampede to powerfully loud gunfire. The sound effects are supported with effective bass boost and powerful .1 LFE energy. Foley sound effects are perfectly in sync with picture. The sounds deliver satisfying ambiance in both interior scenes, such as a few saloon settings, and outdoor settings that envelop with the sounds of nature. The orchestra score is tremendous and dynamic with pinpoint localization of instrumental sections. The music is spread across and within a wide soundstage with aggressive extension to the surrounds for powerful sound field envelopment. Sound field imaging is superb with distinct placement of sounds. Dialogue is intelligible throughout with a clear presence, often ADR produced and forward sounding.

The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an extension of the orchestra score to the height layer as well as occasional subtle atmospherics, such as wind, chirping birds, frog sounds and extensive din. Sound effects are few, such as occasional subdued gunfire. The height layer treatment provides generally good sound field enhancement primarily with the music and atmospherics. Having more treatment would substantially enhance dimensionality further.
