The 2.00:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed digitally using the Arri Alexa Mini LF camera system and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. Picture quality is excellent. The imagery is sharp and clear throughout. Much of the picture appears in the shadowy dark interior environment of Freddy's. The imagery appears natural with realistic settings. The color palette is nicely saturated with vibrant hues with at times glimpses of strong primaries. The animatronic characters are colorful. Flesh tones appear natural. HDR contrast is realistic, Black levels are deep. Shadows exhibit grayish shadings. White levels reflect a dramatic lighting design with spot lighting, as well as the natural light of daylight. Resolution is excellent with facial features that reveal fine detail in complexions and skin tones as well as the textural detail of the animatronic characters, Costumes reveal patterns and fabric detail. Building characteristic and sets are realistic in appearance. Objects reveal texture. This is a satisfying picture that delivers the frights. (Gary Reber)
The Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD 7.1-channel soundtrack is dynamic sounding. Sound effects are boosted with powerful bass transients and intensity with frequency extensions to sub-25 Hz in the .1 LFE channel. The intensity of the sound effects emitted by the animatronic characters builds as the story unfolds with violence intensified. Atmospherics sound realistic. Foley sound effects are realistic and powerful when it comes to tracking the animatronic characters. The synthesizer and orchestra/choral score occupies a wide and deep soundstage that aggressively extends to the surrounds. Fidelity is excellent throughout. Dialogue is intelligible with effective ADR production, though forward sounding.
The Immersive Sound element is comprised of an extension of the music to the height layer as well as periodic dialogue and screams, PA, science fair chatter and various sound effects. All are sporadic but when occurring enhance dimensionality.
This is an energized holosonic® soundtrack that delvers excitement and fear through the mysterious horrific storytelling. (Gary Reber)
