TRON: Legacy was exhibited theatrically in 70 mm (horizontal) IMAX DMR blowup dual-strip 3D and D-Cinema 3D, respectively, in 1.78:1 and 2.39:1. The Blu-ray Disc™ is mastered at 2.39:1 and 1.78:1, with a seemingly subtle shift between 2D and 3D imagery. While viewers must leave their 3-D glasses on during the transitions, the 2D-only images are in no conscious way degraded. On its own, the 2-D presentation is reference quality throughout, with stellar picture quality and dimensionality! The 2.35:1 1080p AVC picture exhibits high-tech, breathtaking imagery, that in MVC 3D brings to life the visually stunning world of TRON, taking you further behind the futuristic digital grid. The elements comprising the 3-D experience are presented with limited "out-of-the-screen" visual effects. Still, the sense of perspective and depth is amazing! To fully appreciate the dynamic qualities of the picture, an optimum viewing environment and machinery is recommended. The room should be darkened, preferably black. The machinery should be a projection or panel system capable of superb contrast ratio performance, with the capability to properly display the deep, solid vastness of blackness and dark shadows and the bright white levels. The result puts you in the grid, with its seemingly endless blackness and shades of gray and blues, with orange/yellow and red, neon highlights. The color palette is nicely saturated against the darker backdrops. Resolution is remarkable, considering the dark abyss within which the imagery is set. Fine detail is evident in close-ups of facial features, clothing, and object textures. With an optimal display device detail is articulate, even in the darkest scenes. Even the finely meshed visuals during flashbacks are fully discernible. Fleshtones are perfectly natural in appearance and nicely contrasted against the blackness. Both real-world and CGI images are clearly delineated. The light cycles, though transparent, project dimensionality with a sense of volume and weight. The glass-like shattered remnants of the digital combatants project out of the screen and scatter in the vastness. Nothing in the picture is exaggerated, with the imagery more reserved than not. The picture is pristine and immaculate throughout. Virtually no ghosting was detective, for an immensely engaging visual experience. This is an incredible technical achievement and a virtually flawless, reference-quality 3-D experience. (Gary Reber)

Nominated for the Academy Award® for Best Sound Editing, the DTS-HD Master Audio™ 7.1-channel soundtrack is reference quality throughout. The soundfield is aggressively holosonic® in spatial delineation, making constant use of the surround channels. The two additional 90-degree surround channels significantly enhance the dimensional depth of the soundfield. Daft Punk's music score delivers a cohesively robust soundscape that perfectly supports the on-grid sequences and the dramatic events leading up to those scenes. The sound is sweeping, with a deep and wide soundstage presence that aggressively penetrates the surround channels, delivering a fullness that engulfs the listening space. Sound effects and atmospherics are impressive, whether distant thunder, roaring light cycles, rumbling flying machines, buzzing insects, and Foley touches that suspend disbelief. Sound effects are aggressively directionalized throughout the soundfield, with pinpoint localization and exciting panning movements. These sound elements are perfectly integrated with the visuals, to create a wonderfully visceral experience that few soundtracks ever achieve. Deep bass is solid, with extension to below 25 Hz in the .1 LFE channel, yet the bass always sounds balanced and without exaggeration. The overall clarity and definition of the sonics is impressive, especially during the many segments in which all channels are pushed to the limits of the SPL standards for movie soundtracks. Surprising is how well the dialogue is spatially integrated and focused, with perfect intelligibility. The D-BOX Motion Code™ encoding is a wonderful complement to the stunning sound and picture. Overall, this is a soundtrack masterpiece that is a pure adrenaline-inducing sonic experience! (Gary Reber)
