Shame depicts the life of a sex addict and his emotionally troubled sister. Brandon (Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Mulligan) moves into his apartment and stirs up memories of their shared painful past, Brandon's insular life spirals out of control. (Gary Reber)

The 2.36:1 1080p AVC picture is a low-budget production, with an engaging natural appearance. The color palette exhibits balanced hues, with a natural intensity. Fleshtones are naturally rendered. Contrast is well balanced with deep, solid blacks and revealing shadow delineation. Resolution is generally soft, though, close-ups are revealing of fine detail. A slight grain structure creates a cinematic effect. This is a solid visual experience that is appealing. (Gary Reber)
The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is conventional and prominently dialogue focused, with generally good spatial integration. Atmospherics are supportive of the street sounds in Manhattan and provide subtle surround envelopment, with effective directionalization and at times strong low-frequency response. The orchestral music score is piano featured and sounds natural, with an effective surround presence. Overall, the soundtrack is not distinguished, though, quietly supports the storytelling.
