Clint Eastwood produced and directed this modern Western, which rode off with four 1992 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Director. Eastwood and Morgan Freeman play retired, down-on-their-luck outlaws William Munny and Ned Logan, who pick up their guns one more time to collect a bounty offered by vengeful prostitutes for the defacing of one of theirs by a drunken cowboy. (Gary Reber)

Special features include commentary by Director Richard Schickel; the featurette Eastwood On Eastwood—a visual history of Clint Eastwood's
illustrious career (HD 68:34); "All On Accounta Pullin' The Trigger" interviews with Eastwood, Actors Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman and Screenwriter David Webb Peoples (HD 22:35); a making-of featurette (HD 25:52); Eastwood...A Star featurette (HD 16:07); the classic Maverick episode Duel At Sundown (HD 49:07); the theatrical trailer; and a 58-page booklet.

The 1080p VC-1 picture, framed at 2.35:1, as with the previously HD-DVD release reviewed in Issue 110, exhibits very nicely rendered image quality that far surpasses any previous version of the movie for home viewing. Detail and definition are impressive, and the picture is smooth and clean with virtually no distractions in the way of VC-1 compression artifacts. Colors have a natural appearance that is complementary of the setting. Viewing in a completely blackened room is recommended due to the dim scenes often only lit by fire or candlelight. The source element is quite clean, although some film grain and dirt is inherent. This is the 20th anniversary edition. (Gary Reber)

The previous HD-DVD Dolby® Digital•Plus 5.1-channel soundtrack was not very inspiring, with very low-level ambiance and music being the main fixture of the corner full-range channels. This is true of this Dolby Digital 5.1-channel rendering, which was also the soundtrack on the version reviewed in Issues 25 and 66. Still, this is a very fine production in terms of the use of dimension, both subtle and substantial in nature, especially with respect to ambient effects. The result is a welcome, palpable sense of expansiveness and immersion. The surrounds play an important role in this, of course, with the occasional tendency to become dramatically heightened in activity. The original recording's somewhat dated fidelity can be noticed through a slightly brittle sonic character, with loud scenes and from the tonality of voices. The discrete soundtrack is preferred for its spatially aggressive envelopment and use of the split surround capability. (Gary Reber)
