The Tempest is the modern retelling of William Shakespeare's final masterpiece. Exiled to a magical island, the sorceress Prospera (Mirren) conjures up a storm that shipwrecks her enemies, and then unleashes her powers for revenge. (Gary Reber)

Special features include commentary, Shakespeare experts commentary, the featurette Raising The Tempest (HD 66:06), a Russell Brand rehearsal riff (HD 04:32), "Julie & Cast: Inside The L.A. Rehearsals" (HD 13:34), the "Mistress Mine" music video (HD 03:22), and up-front previews.

The 2.35:1 1080p AVC picture is gloriously presented with a beautiful cinematic appearance that showcases Stuart Dryburgh's cinematography. If you are appreciative of Shakespeare, you will be pleased with the imaginative visualization presented here. The color palette is veiled, except for close-ups of fleshtones, which are naturally toned and vibrant. Otherwise, the imagery exhibits a gray overcast. Resolution is excellent, with fine detail exhibited in close-ups of facial features, hair, clothing, and object texture. Contrast is generally good, though, blacks at times can be crushed or indistinct and grayish in shade. Overall, this is an engaging filmic visual experience that is stylized to match the imaginative production design. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is nuanced, as well as powerfully dynamic, with aggressive soundfield envelopment. The .1 LFE channel is effectively used to heighten the ominous action scenes and provide subtle but effective support for the atmospherics and sound effects, with bass extension to sub-25 Hz frequencies. Elliot Goldenthal's orchestral music score is nicely recorded with a wide and deep soundstage presence that extends to the surrounds. Dialogue consistently sounds natural and is effectively integrated spatially. This is a boldly dynamic and immersive sonic experience that enhances the imaginative imagery. (Gary Reber)
