Lethal Weapon is the thrill-packed story of two cops—both of whom hate to work with partners. Gibson and Glover star as the wild-eyed, burnt-out Martin Riggs and the easygoing Roger Murtaugh. But their partnership becomes the key to their survival when, in the period of 48 hours, a routine murder investigation leads to an all-out war with an international heroine ring. You better duck quick because this film fires fast action scenes like bullets, but you don't want to miss a thing! (Tricia Spears)
Special features include commentary by Richard Donner, additional footage (SD 29:44), the "Lethal Weapon" music video by Honeymoon Suite, and the theatrical trailer.
Several incarnations of Lethal Weapon have been reviewed since the first LaserDisc in Issue 02, including DVDs in Issues 23, 41, 111, and 114. With each rendering the picture has been improved. This latest rendering features a 1.78:1 1080p VC-1 treatment that is faithful to Richard Donner's and Stephen Goldblatt's original photography. While grain is still prevalent and the picture exhibits an overall soft focus, colors are strong and saturated, with deep, solid blacks. Resolution appears improved, with textural features refined. For the age of this film, the picture looks fantastic and is indicative just how good an older film can transfer to high definition. (Gary Reber)
The repurposed DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is aggressive and provides an excellent sense of both envelopment and distinct directional effects. The stereo staging is panoramic, with an excellent sense of depth. The special sound effects are very dynamic, with excellent bass extension and depth. Dialogue is ADR-produced and sounds manufactured at times. But the pace and intensity of the action scenes is underscored by the excellent sound mix. Bass is enhanced with effective .1 LFE energy during action scenes. The surround channels are actively engaged with directional effects and music ambiance. While fidelity is dated, the sonics are engaging and effectively support the storytelling. (Gary Reber)
