Set in contemporary Iran, A Separation is a compelling drama about the dissolution of a marriage. Simin (Hatami) wants to leave Iran with her husband Nader (Moadi) and daughter Termeh (Farhadi) and sues for divorce when Nader refuses to leave behind his Alzheimer-suffering father. Her request having failed, Simin returns to her parents' home but Termeh decides to stay with Nader. (Gary Reber)

Special features include commentary with Writer/Director Asghar Farhadi, the featurettes An Evening With Asghar Farhadi (HD 30:42) and Birth Of A Director (HD 07:53), the theatrical trailer, and up-front previews.

The 1.85:1 1080p AVC picture exhibits a perfectly natural appearance with a natural color palette. Fleshtones appear natural throughout, and realistic. Hues are warm and never exaggerated. Resolution is generally softly focused, though, close-ups reveal good detail. Overall, this is a picture that is not particularly distinguished and understated. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio™ 5.1-channel soundtrack is undistinguished, with a monaural focus and occasional stereo atmospherics. Dialogue is prevalent and nonstop but nicely integrated spatially. The sound is serviceable but unremarkable. (Gary Reber)
