Based on the novel by Alan Furst, Spies Of Warsaw, the BBC America miniseries finds French and German intelligence operatives locked in a life-and-death struggle in the years leading up to the Second World War. This is a tale of espionage and pure intelligence. At the French embassy in Warsaw, the new military attaché, Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier (Tennant), a decorated hero of the 1913 war, is drawn into a world of abduction, betrayal, and intrigue in the diplomatic salons and back alleys of the city. At the same time, the handsome aristocrat finds himself in a passionate love affair with Anna (Montgomery), a Parisian lawyer for the League of Nations. Risking his life, Mercier works in the shadows amid a cast of characters, some known to him as spies, some never to be revealed. It is a city where people drink and fight and spy and love, because no one knows what tomorrow will bring. (Gary Reber)
Special features include the featurette David Tennant On Spies Of Warsaw (HD 10:10) and an Ultra Violet digital copy.
The 1.78:1 1080p AVC picture is stylized, with an intriguing, engaging appearance. The color palette is naturally hued with accurate fleshtones and rich and warm tones. Contrast is well balanced with deep blacks and revealing shadow delineation. Resolution is revealing of fine detail, though, at times is softly focused. Overall, this is a pleasing visual experience.
