In The Silence, a young girl is brutally murdered in a wheat field on a hot summer day in 1986. The killer is never found. Twenty-three years later, a 13-year-old girl disappears in similar circumstances, leading the police to suspect the same killer may be at work. As the retired investigator of the earlier case joins a widowed young detective to delve into the mystery of the parallel crimes, the parents of the missing girl, the mother of the original victim, and an accomplice to the 1986 killing all have their worlds begin to crumble as they are drawn deeper into a web of guilt, despair, and uncertainty. Based on the novel by Jan Costin Wagner. (Gary Reber)

Special features include cast interviews, Under The Sun (HD 58:36) and Quietsch (HD 07:41)—films by Baran bo Odar, the theatrical trailer, and upfront previews.

The 2.34:1 1080p AVC picture is cinematic throughout, with natural color exhibited in warm and rich hues. Fleshtones are naturally rendered. Contrast is well balanced with deep blacks and revealing shadow delineation. Resolution is excellent, with fine detail revealed throughout, especially in close-ups. Outdoor settings are nicely focused and sharp. Overall this is a naturally depicted image that is engaging with suspense. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio™ German language 5.1-channel soundtrack features effective low-level ambient atmospherics with subtle surround immersion. The well-recorded orchestral music score provides, at times, a strong surround presence, with punctuated deep bass in the .1 LFE channel. At times dynamics build to an intense state, but overall the sonics are nuanced and generally quiet, including subdued natural dialogue. Overall, the soundtrack is effectively complementary to the story. (Gary Reber)
