The United States not yet involved in World War II, Rafe McCawley (Affleck) volunteers to fight for the British Royal Air Force, leaving behind his lovely nurse girlfriend, Evelyn (Beckinsale), and his best friend from childhood, Danny Walker (Hartnett). Stationed in "Pearl Harbor" together, Danny and Evelyn fall in love after hearing that Rafe was shot down. Yet, Rafe resurfaces just in time for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (a spectacular effects-laden historical backdrop to the love story), and the trio's troubles are put on hold so they can fight for their country. Following the attack, Evelyn must make her choice as America prepares its courageous retaliation. This is a re-edited, R-rated, 184-minute Director's Cut of the movie. (Suzanne Hodges)

Special features include the same supplements found on the DVD reviewed in Issue 56: the 47-minute documentary "Journey To The Screen: The Making Of Pearl Harbor," 45-minute "History Channel program Unsung Heroes Of Pearl Harbor," Faith Hill music video ("There You'll Be"), teaser trailer, and the theatrical release trailer. There is also a Movie Showcase and up-front ads.

The 2.35:1 Blu-ray Disc looks great, with well-captured details, deep blacks, and impressive shadow delineation. Hues are deeply saturated, while still maintaining a natural and vibrant appearance. (Danny Richelieu)

The uncompressed linear PCM 5.1-channel soundtrack provides more natural-sounding dialogue over the Dolby® Digital encoding (which is also included on the disc). The mix is fantastic, fidelity is pristine, and the soundstaging is impressive. This is a very good release. (Danny Richelieu)
