Born unto an alcoholic father (Baldwin) and a bipolar mother (Bening), Augusten Burrough's (Jack Kaeding) life has been a colorful, and difficult, one that takes an unusual turn when his care is given to his mother's therapist, Dr. Finch (Cox). Thrust into this new, and ever eccentric environment, Augusten (Cross) finds solace in one of Finch's daughters, Natalie (Wood), and in the journal he uses to record the events of his life. Running With Scissors is based on the personal memoir's of Augusten Burroughs. (Jack Kelley)

The anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD combines bold, oversaturated colors with details that can be captured well—although there are times when the images can be poorly resolved. Shadow delineation is not well balanced, as details in the shadows can be crushed to blackness. The black levels are deep, and while edge enhancement is noticeable, it is not overly intrusive. The Blu-ray Disc does not improve upon the problems found on the DVD, other than the requisite improvement in resolution. Still, this is not one of the best high-definition releases. The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel encoding features an over-aggressive mix that attempts, with varying levels of success, to place phantom images across the front stage. True phantom imaging in the surrounds is limited, but the channels are used to create a diffuse atmospheric field from time to time. The Blu-ray Disc's uncompressed linear PCM 5.1-channel encoding improves dynamic range some, but also unveils subtle hiss that is not as audible in the DVD's Dolby encoding. (Danny Richelieu)
