WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Cool World is an adult rated film from director-animator Ralph Bakshi. It is an outrageous mix of animation and live action. While in jail, a cartoonist (Gabriel Byrne) creates a comic strip fantasy world where his mind can escape the confines of his cell. Cool World is inhabited by doodles (cartoons), one of whom is the ultimate fantasy woman, Holli Would. It is actually an alternate universe from which the toonsmith has been manipulated into creating a conduit to the real world for the toons to become human. Holli seduces her toonsmith and becomes human (Kim Basinger) fleeing to Las Vegas pursued by a cop (Brad Pitt), the only other human in Cool World. Catastrophic consequences are in store for the doodles and the ’noids (humans).

LaserDisc Picture:
Visually this disc looks superb. The interaction between the animated characters and the real actors is almost believable and is fun to watch. Human flesh tones are a bit distorted. The colors in the animated sequences are spectacular! The measured aspect ratio is 1.68:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Unencumbered by the need to sound like anything in the real world, the soundtrack is a stunner with fantastic original music and spectacular surround effects that test the Dolby MP matrix.
