WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
O’Toole plays author Cervantes, the playwright who is taken to jail by the Spanish Inquisition. There, he tells about his lifelong work to a host of villagers that also have been arrested. Don Quixote de La Mancha, the knight errant in Miguel de Cervantes’ 1605 novel, the subject of the play, is also played by O’Toole. The The film switches between the jail cell and the story being told by Cervantes. Sophia Loren is Aldonza and James Coco plays Sancho Panza, Don Quixote’s squire.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture contains a substantial amount of brown and gray tones that present an effective realism of the period. The quality of the transfer is excellent, with sharp detail.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack, remixed in Dolby Surround® from a four-track magnetic stereo master, provides wide separation and great fidelity with the musical score while most of the dialogue is centralized. The music recordings have a “studio” sound to them, but this works well with the production.
