WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
In The Vanishing a young writer and his beautiful girlfriend (Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock) visit a crowded rest stop while on vacation. She mysteriously vanishes and he, haunted by her disappearance, totally devotes his life for the next few years, to solving the mystery, virtually forsaking all other pursuits. When he meets her demented psychopathic abductor, played by three time Oscar® nominee Jeff Bridges, he willingly goes along with his obsessive behavior just to learn the secret of his girlfriend’s fate. There are some suspenseful, unnerving moments as we come face to face with Bridges character, an eerily unsettling man with a family, a good job, and a murderously twisted take on reality.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture quality on this disc is variable. Some scenes look really good while others look out of focus and grainy. Color is generally good but flesh tones vary considerably from scene to scene and some video artifacts are visible.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is generally excellent. Dialogue is always clear and intelligible and the surround effects, though subtle, are enveloping and well integrated into the story
