WSR Narrative Review |

Story Synopsis:
Spielberg’s classic sci-fi fantasy about humankind’s first meeting with extraterrestrials. Impressive special effects by Douglas Trumbull. Academy Award winner for Best Cinematography.
LaserDisc Picture:
The digital video transfer at about 2.21:1 is superb for its pristine visuals and color balance. The D-1 component digital video master was created from a 35mm interpositive of the Special Edition under Stephen Spielberg’s supervision. Using the trims from the original camera negative, Voyager created a new interpositive of the excised scenes to restore the original edition.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sonics are equally impressive for their dramatic and dynamic presentation. The Dolby Surround® was created from the original 35mm magnetic four-track mix, using a Dolby DS-4 encoder. It demands a critical listen.
