WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The John Huston/Ray Stark screen production of Tennessee Williams’ award-winning play, The Night Of The Iguana, starring Richard Burton as the confused American priest, Reverend Shannon, who is compelled with conflict and passion as he struggles against alcoholism, women, sex, and religious issues. Suspended from his Virginia church, Shannon escapes to Mexico for some soul searching. There he lands a job as a tour guide for a busload of un-wed, strong-minded, and sometimes neurotic women including an 18-year old nymph Charlotte (Sue Lyon). Shannon finds himself entangled with not only Charlotte, but also the wise Hannah (Deborah Kerr), and an old flame, Maxine (Ava Gardner), all further complicating Shannon’s life.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 black and white transfer has excellent sharpness and a generally good grayscale. However, some outdoor scenes look somewhat overly bright.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is compressed and mono. and does not impart the dynamics to properly underscore the drama.
