WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Keep is based on the novel by F. Paul Wilson and billed as a gothic thriller combining horror, romance and the supernatural. The story is set during World War II in German-occupied Romania. Nazi soldiers under the command of Jurgen Prochnow have been sent to garrison a mysterious fortress, but a nightmarish discovery is soon made—the massive structure was built to keep something in...not out. Scott Glenn portrays the stranger who battles supernatural forces whose evil power is dwelling within and who is responsible for the mystery behind a series of gruesome killings.

LaserDisc Picture:
The transfer has been re-composed and matted to 2.12:1. There appears at the top and bottom of the frame an annoying white outline, possibly from a cursor generator. Slight grain is apparent in the otherwise sharp picture. Fleshtone hues are inconsistent and look unnatural with a slight reddish tint. Shadow detail is excellent.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound features an aggressive surround and natural ambience in each scene. This heightens the spatial cues depicted in the setting of The Keep. Dialogue, while generally intelligible, is distorted at loud levels as are some of the sound effects.
