WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Joy Luck Club, based upon the novel by Amy Tan, is the story of four Chinese American friends and their adult daughters, with fine performances by a wonderful ensemble cast of actresses. In a series of flashbacks, against a beautiful backdrop of China past, each mother tells her own story of the tragedy, heartbreak and hopes and dreams of the future that has shaped her life. The life affirming tales, told to enrich and strengthen the lives of the four daughters and help to solve their marital and domestic dilemmas are filled with love and inspiration. The performances are wonderful and hold your attention with their sincere depiction of their lives and loves.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture quality is marred by an excessive amber filter that casts an orange tint on fleshtones for a unnatural effect. Poor overall color fidelity and lack of detail also degrade the picture quality. The aspect ratio is 1.85:1.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is generally not enhanced by the effective use of surrounds, but rather the overall effect is monaural. A rather tender movie, the emphasis is on dialogue intelligibility, not dramatic effect.
