WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Academy Award® winning The Age Of Innocence is based upon Edith Wharton’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The story depicts a tragic yet ravishing romance among three wealthy New York socialites caught in a love triangle that betrays their social and ethical boundaries. Archer (Day-Lewis), a successful attorney who secretly longs for true love and passion, becomes obsessed with his desire for the controversial Countess Ellen Olenska (Pfeiffer) despite his engagement to the charming and proper May Welland (Ryder). The Martin Scorsese directed story is a gripping portrait of repressed desire, hidden romance, regret, and guilt amidst the gran-deur and hypocrisy of high society in the 1870’s.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been recomposed at 2.13:1. Color is grossly oversaturated and exaggerated with an unnatural orange/red filtered tint which renders fleshtones unnatural. While the picture is overly contrasted, blacks are excellent and images are sharp and detailed. There are some artifacts but otherwise the picture is extremely clean.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The musical score provides a wonderful spatial envelopment, although the fidelity is veiled overall with most scenes in mono.
