WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
David Cronenberg’s provocative film, M Butterfly is based on David Henry Hwang’s Tony award winning hit play, which in itself was inspired by the sensational espionage trail involving a French diplomat. Jeremy Irons stars as Rene Gallimard, a French diplomat who on seeing the performance of Beijing Opera star Song Liling falls in love with his “Butterfly.” The secretive love affair spans nearly 20 years, before disaster and the shocking truth is made known publicly.

LaserDisc Picture:
This is finely honed picture with first rate image quality, lightning effects and magnificent cinematography. The picture has been matted to 1.75:1. It is consistently sharp and exceptionally noise free, with excellent detail throughout. Flesh tones are accurate and the hues are strong for a very natural looking picture.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The music score by Howard Shore under the opening title sequence is wonderful and continues throughout the movie. There are several wonderful operatic performances that highlight the soundtrack. Surround envelopment is subtle but effective. Dialogue is always natural.
