WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Based on the the turn-of-the-century classic children’s book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this is the story of an orphaned girl named Mary (Maberly) who after the death of her parents is sent to live with her wealthy, but heartbroken uncle in his rambling old English mansion. Lonely and friendless, Mary wanders through the house to find her invalid cousin (Prowse) and helps him to discover his strength and appetite for life. Mary soon discovers a forbidden garden, locked-up for years after the death of her uncle’s wife. And with her cousin’s friendship, special things begin to happen to restore the hidden glade of beauty in the forgotten sanctuary.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been cropped to 1.95:1. Images have a underexposed subdued, filtered appearance whose softness blurs fine detail. Slight grain and purplish flesh tones mar the otherwise beautiful photography.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack has an effective surround ambiance that envelops the sound field. Dialogue intelligibly is dimensional having been recorded during principal photography, in most scenes, rather than looped.
