WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Grumpy Old Men is a quirky yet heartwarming comedy about a fifty-year fight between the best of enemies with a love interest who comes between them. Two funny old men John Gustafson (Jack Lemmon) and Max Golman (Walter Matthau), are the finicky next-door neighbors whose long running feud becomes a rivalry when an attractive widow (Anne-Margret) moves into the house across the street. The story is set against the backdrop of snowy Minnesota and ice fishing.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture has been matted at 1.80:1. Images appear to be softly focused and lack the sharpness of the best discs. Outdoor scenes are clear and wonderful. Contrast is a bit wanting and some scenes impart a slight grain. Fleshtones are natural and there are no artifacts to mar what is overall great image quality.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby Surround® soundtrack is well recorded with excellent fidelity and a fine music score that is dynamic and enveloping. The dialogue is perfectly natural and intelligible. The quiet scenes are especially well executed in terms of sound dynamics.
