WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
John Boorman’s The Emerald Forest is based on the incredible true story about an engineer, Bill Markham (Powers Boothe), who while participating in a project to help further expand modern civilization onto the Amazon frontier, finds himself helpless as his son (Charley Boorman) disappears from under his nose at the dense jungle’s edge, kidnapped by “The Invisible People.” This captivating, dangerous, and riveting story unfolds as Markham returns to the Amazon year after year in desperate search for his lost son. Then, ten years later, Markham finds the man that had once been his boy as a warrior from a very different world.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 2.35:1 picture features beautiful cinematography shot in South America. Color fidelity is excellent with good contrast and accurately rendered fleshtones for a very natural look. Images are sharp and the color is vivid. Grain mars the dark scenes, but otherwise the picture quality is sure to please.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is wanting dynamically but the jungle sounds are wonderful, as is the exotic music score that provides the spatial ambience. Good directional effects with excellent bass extension, but an aggressive surround mix would have been more exciting.
