WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The Ref is an outrageously clever comedy about a jewel thief who chooses the wrong family to hold hostage. Before long the thief (Dennis Leary) finds himself being driven crazy by the bickering couple, played by Judy Davis and Kevin Spacey. The couple delight in making each other miserable even when being held at gunpoint. This and their 15-year-old son who is on the point of becoming a juvenile delinquent by blackmailing his commanding officer at military school. The captor’s only hope is to act as referee to the couple in order to resolve their differences, and the line between captor and hostage begins to blur.

LaserDisc Picture:
The artifact-free picture has been matted at 1.85:1. Fleshtones are naturally rendered and the deep blacks and natural interior visuals make for a solid appearance that is sure to please.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
Nothing exceptional to hear, just conventional movie stereo with mono effects and dialogue, and the stereo presence limited to music and the surround ambience it imparts.
