WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Pat Conroy’s best-selling novel is brought to the screen by Streisand, whose heavy hand is evident throughout. Nolte tries mightily (with a fake Southern accent no less) to play a disillusioned football coach who has to come to grips with the residue of his dysfunctional family.

LaserDisc Picture:
Picture quality is disappointing and does not reflect the dedication to quality that is a Streisand hallmark. The picture, transferred from a 35mm low contrast print, has been matted at 1.80:1 not in the promoted director approved 1.85:1 original aspect ratio. Fleshtones are distractingly inaccurate and unnatural, oversaturated and inconsistent throughout as is the visual content overall. Detail and sharpness are inferior to the best transfers, and noticable grain and noise, as well as artifacts are exhibited throughout.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
James Newton Howard’s musical score is glorious with a lush full orchestral recording by Shawn Murphy that provides a fine sense of subtle spatial envelopment. The dialogue, while generally excellent, is in places troublesome. And without the stereo produced score, there is no surround. Thus, this is essentially a monaural soundtrack and disappoints as such.
