WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
An Officer And A Gentleman is a timeless, romantic tale of camaraderie and personal growth that is as gripping and uplifting today as it was when originally released in 1982. Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) is a cocky loaner who enters Officer Candidate School to become a Navy pilot. Louis Gossett, Jr. brilliantly plays the tough drill instructor who teaches him the importance of discipline, love and friendship. Debra Winger plays the local girl he eventually learns to love, and David Keith is a friend and fellow candidate who tragically doesn’t make it. The cast is superb and the viewing experience is satisfying. Louis Gossett, Jr. received the 1982 Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actor for his powerful performance.

LaserDisc Picture:
The picture is matted at 1.88:1 and is generally sharp and detailed with good contrast. Fleshtones are natural and colors are vivid. Night scenes are noise-free and solid with good shadow detail and no distracting artifacts. The picture looks real clean and is sure to please.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is undistinguished mono with a harsh edge to the dialogue.
