WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Silence Of The North is based on the autobiography of 80-year-old Olive Fredrickson from the book by Olive Fredrickson with Ben East. It follows her life from the time she was a young girl in the early 1900’s through to the Depression. The film was produced entirely in Canada on locations in northern Alberta and Ontario, and Winnipeg. Fredrickson came to Canada in 1919. When her trapper husband died, she and her three small children survived under rugged pioneer conditions by farming and hunting until she remarried in 1932. The exquisite cinematography of Richard Leiterman allows the viewer to share the grandeur of the Canadian north and the courageous lives of these people.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 2.50:1 picture has been recomposed from its original Panavision® scope 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The picture is naturally depicted with accurate fleshtones, realistic interior scenes and excellent shadow detail. Colors are vivid with deep blacks, but some scenes are over-enhanced and some artifacts are distracting.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is mono and the liner notes indicate that some music was rescored.
