WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
The War is director John Avnet’s second film (Fried Green Tomatoes) which also takes place in the rural south. It tells the story of the close-knit impoverished Simmons family and their summer of 1970. The father, played by Kevin Costner, is a Vietnam war veteran who has hopes of a new life and tries to pass down his pacifist morals to his son Stu ( Elijah Wood). That summer Stu and his twin sister Lidia, with the help of their friends, build a tree-house in a massive oak with items from a junkyard that belonged to them before their house was demolished. Their arch rivals, the bullying tough Lipnicki kids, discover their theft and the result is an all-out battle for the treehouse in which neither side is the victor, a metaphor for the folly of war.

LaserDisc Picture:
The matted 1.82:1 picture is very natural and slightly soft overall. Fleshtones are accurate and color fidelity and contrast are excellent. Some minor noise is apparent in some scenes, but generally there are no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The Dolby Surround® soundtrack has its moments of aggressive surround envelopment especially in the war scenes, but otherwise, except for the music mono prevails.
