WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Kiss Of Death is a hyper-realistic, film noir loosely based on the 1947 gangster classic of the same name. It was filmed on the streets of Queens, New York. The suspense-laden story of a man who is relentlessly haunted by his past stars David Caruso (NYPD Blue) in his feature film debut. Nicholas Cage plays Little Junior, a powerful hood whose topless bar is just a minor part of his financial empire which is based on the multi-billion dollar car theft industry. Caruso, a Queens native, plays street-savvy ex-con Jimmy Kilmartin, who is caught between an underworld that has be-trayed him and a legal bureaucracy that soon may. Helen Hunt plays Jimmy’s wife, a woman trying to put her past behind her. Samuel L. Jackson as Calvin, caries a badge but feels sympathy for Jimmy’s plight.

LaserDisc Picture:
Matted at 1.85:1, the picture is sharp and detailed with but the slightest noise in the dark scenes, but no artifacts. Fleshtones are accurately rendered and colors are vivid. Blacks are deep and solid with excellent shadow detail.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The sound is terrific with aggressive surround, dimensionality and dynamics.
