WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Picture Bride recounts a fascinating, largely unknown element of American history with its careful portrayal of the hundreds of Asian immigrant women who, through arranged marriages, sought new lives and economic opportunity in Hawaii. The film centers around Riyo (Youki Kudoh) a young and sometimes timid city girl who, in 1918 Tokyo, submits her photograph to a matchmaker who arranges her wedding to Matsuji ( Akira Takayama), a sugar-cane plantation worker. Upon arrival to the Hawaiian Islands, Riyos’ enchanted expectations are shattered as she quickly learns about the hellish working conditions of the exploited cane fields and of a cruel deception so casually imposed upon her by the matchmaking process. This unique tale of survival and struggle is beautifully photographed, capturing the sun-soaked scenery of the islands.

LaserDisc Picture:
The 1.85:1 matted picture is sharp and detailed with excellent color fidelity that is warm and natural. The picture is solid with the slightest noise in dark scenes but no artifacts.

LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is pleasantly enveloping although fidelity is a bit on the bright edge.
