WSR Narrative Review |
|
Story Synopsis:
Coppola’s stunning masterpiece of war and redeemption (loosely based on Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness”) is here transferred to laserdisc in a state-of-the-art aural and visual presentation. This may not be “war” but it sure as hell is great filmmaking!
LaserDisc Picture:
This disc, mastered from the 35mm anamorphic interpositive and the original EK negative, at 2.0:1, represents the compromised decision of cinematographer Storaro who commanded the transfer. As a result, when you have filmmakers that are this artistic about their compositions, you notice that fine horizontal adjustments to the one side or the other were made to reposition the work in an effort to get the composition right in this odd frame ratio. Nevertheless, the transfer’s picture and sound quality is reference quality and exemplary of one of the finest audio and video transfers ever produced.
LaserDisc Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is capable of immense dynamics and realism. The bass response throughout is room shaking. It is a new track created especially for this LaserDisc from a remix at LucasArts’ Skywalker Sound North of the Dolby® A recorded master six-track components. The magnificent Dolby Surround® digital soundtrack is flat out powerful. It will challenge the finest home theatre systems’ sonic capabilities.
